Research Focus 1

  • Research Projects

  • Research of coping with chronically ill patients and their families

  • Project: Psychosocial adaptation and coping with multiples sclerosis.

  • (H. Friedrich, G. Ziegeler.)

  • After terminating different studies regarding the life with chronic illness, in 1999 a long-term-study was concluded in which over a time of 10 years since the confrontation with the diagnosis, 60 persons affected by multiple sclerosis and their relatives were followed up. The leading questions were: how do the patients and their families manage the social reality of their "illness" and - at the same time - what are the determinants of the coping process? The central factors such as the structure of social life, the quality of familial relationship and family dynamics, experiences within the medical system - especially the role of the attending doctors - were included in the investigation in order to be able to understand the power and powerlessness of the ill persons in the day-to-day coping with their disease.

Research Focus 2

  • Evaluation of the Effects of Medical High-Technology

  • 1. Project: Medical technology and its social consequences as exemplified by prenatal diagnosis. . (H. Friedrich, K.-H. Henze, S. Stemann-Acheampong.)

  • The objective of this project was the evaluation of psycho-social effects of prenatal-diagnosis and their social function. The data assessed by qualitative, retrospective interviews with pregnant women, their partners and their physicians were analyzed by hermeneutic methods. One of the main findings was the prenatal diagnosis apart from their medical meaning - have an arcane ritual sense which reinforces their application more than all participants in this process are aware of. Thus, prenatal-diagnostic procedures assert themselves as a ritual for coping with anxiety as a "rite de passage", which exists between the pregnant woman and her doctor.

  • 2. Project: The Impact of Medical Technology in Oncology. (H. Friedrich, A. Osterland, M. Röslen, S. Stemann-Acheampong.)

  • Medical technology is applied extensively in oncology in regard to etiologic research, diagnosis and therapy. However, the successes in this field are relatively small - compared to the great expenses in regard to research, early detection, therapy and prevention of cancer. The objective of this project was to investigate impact of technology in the different fields of practice of oncology, whether the perception of illness, the concepts of treatment, self-comprehension and self-definition as oncologists and the doctor-patient-relationship are influenced by it and which significance it generally gains. Closely connected with it is also the question for conclusions for possible developments in oncology in the future, especially, where cancer diseases remain therapy-resistant. The interdependent influence between medical technology and oncology is of major interest, because in particular at this point the medical technologic priority of orientation is put into question. In this context not only the official and manifest meanings of medical technology in the "fight against cancer", but also their latent contents of significance and attributions should be investigated and elaborated.

Research Focus 3

  • Research in Psychotherapy

  • 1. Project: Comparative analysis regarding the out-patient (ambulatory) pychotherapeutic care for adults and children and adolescents. (H. Friedrich, I. Schütte, O. Peschken.)

  • After institutionalisation of psychotherapy as a substantial part of regular medical care in the German health system in 1999 the project aims at the assessment of objective criteria for the optimal delivery of psychotherapy services in out-patient care. Implied is the systematic assessment of psychopatholocial illnesses and disturbances, the different methods of psychotherapy for different sections of the population and the financing of psychotherapy. Also the different levels in the working conditions of psychotherapists were examined.

  • 2. Project: Liaison psychotherapy in a general hospital. (H. Friedrich, Ch.. Bork, G. Lücke.)

  • The aim of this project is to accompany and support a psychotherapeutic service of counselling and liaison, psychotherapy, integrated in hospitals, if the quality of this service was assessed in regard to the improvement of communication between patients, doctors and nursing staff. Thereby both the interaction processes between patient and professionals and in particular the conflicts and processes of interaction in psychotherapeutic processes were analysed.

Research Focus 4

  • Basic ethical problems in an age of medical technology

  • 1. Project: Comparative analysis regarding the out-patient (ambulatory) pychotherapeutic care for adults and children and adolescents. (H. Friedrich, I. Schütte, O. Peschken.)

  • 1.Project: Dying in hospices and in palliative care units. An empirical comparison between two forms of in-patient care of severely ill and dying human beings. (H. Friedrich, K.-H. Henze.)

  • In the field of in-patient care of seriously ill - respectively - dying patients there exist two significant concepts of care (hospices and palliative care units) The main aim of this empirical analysis is the comparison of the both - non-disjunctive - concepts: their theoretical positions and justifications, their manifest and latent ideological orientations, the everyday-practice and interactional context as well as their contribution to the change in the social values and attitudes regarding death.
